I largely agree with this assessment of Mitt Romney.  He seemed normal until he realized everyone else was running to the right on everything.  He followed the pack.  He could have staked out a, “hey I’m a conservative but I’m not tongue-kissing the whack jobs” position that would make him more appealing to independents and possibly conservative democrats who are displeased with President Obama.  Imagine a republican who resists the temptation to launch culture war bombs (sorry Mitch Daniels, it’s not you), criticizes the President on policy, rather than identity (Trump = fail), and refuses to grovel before Rush Limbaugh.  I’ll never understand why someone isn’t trying to claim this ground.
